How Do I Brush My Dogs Teeth?

This is a question that we get a lot at the Pet Hospital, so here are some helpful steps in how to brush your dog’s teeth:

1. Start by getting your dog used to having his muzzle handled – Just for a few seconds on a regular basis and end the experience with positive reinforcement like his favourite treat.
2. Introducing toothpaste – A small amount of pet toothpaste can be applied to your finger and rub along the canine teeth and gradually work around the entire mouth. Make sure to include the gums. We recommend Healthy mouth gel or C.E.T Enzymatic Toothpaste.
3. Introducing the toothbrush – Use a brush recommended by your veterinarian. Wet the bristles and apply a line of toothpaste onto the brush. Holding the toothbrush like a pen and concentrate on the canine teeth using gentle circular motions.
4. Brushing the rest of the teeth – Using gentle circular motion work along the top teeth from the incisors to the back of the mouth. You can gradually build the amount of time to each tooth. Most of the tartar buildup accumulates on the outer surface of the tooth.

Ideally brushing your pet’s teeth daily is a gold standard, but realistically a few times a week is great too.
